Did you know that over time the tips on your ring may wear down? It doesn’t happen right away but it is always a good idea to keep an eye on your treasure and how you are wearing it. We recommend bringing your ring in to have it cleaned and inspected every 6 months. When your tips wear down they become thin and put your stone at risk for falling out. What we look for (under magnification) is if your tips look like this example picture.
We want you to be confident that your stone is staying where it should. If we notice it needs maintenance we will let you know. If the tips have worn very flat, we can reinforce them by adding more metal which is called tipping. If there is more wear than tipping can cover, we may be able to replace an entire prong. When all the prongs are worn, sometimes it is more cost effective and structurally sound to replace the whole finding or head holding the gemstone.
If this is all jeweler-gibberish to you, bring in your ring and we will check and clean it for you complimentary then we can discuss any maintenance options.0
